Make a Boob Collection

I’ll be posting pictures of finished boobs under the label Boob Collection (now there’s a word I never thought I would use). You can read about how to make them here.

Make a Boob is a project about breast cancer.

The project has two main goals:

offering people with breast cancer to participate in workshops where we decorate boobs. These workshops are set up in co-operation with the local chapter of the Cancer Association. Participants can decide to keep their work or to donate them to Make a Boob Art.

to create awareness and involvement through

- participating in workshops and decorating boobs
- exhibition of Make a Boob Art

Creating Make a Boob Art. There will be made several art pieces depending on how many boobs that are made. At least one quilt will be donated to the Norwegian Cancer Association. Others might be donated to other facilities that treat breast cancer or –patients.

Exhibition of Make a Boob Art. The art pieces will be exhibited.

Make a Boob!

Make plain ones

Plain ones will be decorated at Make a Boob workshops during 2011.

You’ll need
A regular CD
Fabric for the top, any colour and style will be fine (got lots of orphants and UFOs? check out the treasured ones)
Light fabric for the back
Fine line fabric marker or pencil
Low loft, non bearding batting
Black thread

Using the CD as template, draw circles on the top or bottom fabric leaving approx ½” between the circles.
Layer the top, batting and backing fabric and pin the layers together. Please do not use basting spray as this might gum up the needles while decorating.

Sew along the line twice using black thread on top and bottom
Cut out the circles leaving a 1 - 1 1/2 mm outside the line.
Done!

Make treasured ones

Treasured ones are made from little treasures; those bits and pieces and orphan blocks you have laying around just waiting to be put to good use. Old tops you still don’t want to finish after a couple of years would make wonderful basis for little pieces of art. Pieced or appliquéd works both very well.

These will be decorated at Make a Boob workshops during 2011.

You’ll need
Blocks
Low loft, non-bearding batting
Light backing

Proceed as for the plain ones. For blocks it might be easier to draw the circle on the front.

Make adorned ones

Adorned ones are decorated and will be used as inspiration at workshops and stitched into Make a Boob quilt(s). The quilt will be donated to the Norwegian Cancer Association at the end of the Make a Boob project. In case there are several quilts some might be donated to hospitals or other organisations that deal with breast cancer.

You’ll need
Plain one(s)
Beads, trims, yarn, lace, buttons, floss, fabric shapes; these will not go in the washer so have fun with it (no sharp metal objects though).

Attach your embellishments to the circle by hand using needle and thread. If you'd like to machine stitch your pieces, please check out the fancy ones.

Let the stitches go through all three layers and make sure that hard stuff like buttons and beads stay well inside the circle.

Please do sign them on the back.

A little warning: these are highly addictive...

Make fancy ones

Fancy ones are made from finished pieces of art. You can use any kind of top; appliquéd, pieced, painted - whatever your medium is as long as the basis is fabric. Please keep in mind that they will be stitched onto a quilt so they need to be sewable.
Baste the layers together, quilt (or not) and cut. I have used one of my yarn pieces for the samples.

Top
Low loft, non-bearding batting
Light backing

Proceed as for the plain ones. It might be easier to draw the circles onto the light backing. This step was kind of scary.
